Protecting a Community's Largest Water Feature Through Proactive Maintenance
A single community lake often becomes the centerpiece of an entire neighborhood. Residents enjoy the waterfront views every day, visitors notice it immediately upon entering the community, and property managers rely on it to support both aesthetics and stormwater management.
Since 1999, Gulf Coast Aquatics has provided ongoing management for a large community lake in Southwest Florida. Although the property includes only one primary lake, maintaining its appearance requires the same proactive planning, routine inspections, and customized management as a much larger system.
The Challenge
Large lakes can develop several different vegetation issues at the same time.
Shallow shoreline areas may encourage plants such as Baby Tears, torpedograss, or alligatorweed, while deeper sections are monitored for submerged aquatic vegetation including Hydrilla or Southern Naiad. Seasonal algae blooms can also develop when water temperatures rise and nutrient levels increase.
Because the lake serves as a highly visible community amenity, even localized vegetation problems can quickly affect the overall appearance of the neighborhood.
